NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc said on Thursday it has increased its sales of the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil, its generic equivalent of Cialis, by a third to its current level of sales.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, a widely used drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday and is expected to increase sales by around 20 percent in the United States.
The news comes on the heels of Pfizer's drug sales data for the first half of the year, which showed a 3.7 percent increase in Viagra sales for the first three months of 2024.
Pfizer said on Monday it is working on a "new" version of its erectile dysfunction drug called Cialis, which is still on patent protection in the United States.
The new erectile dysfunction drug has been touted as a more affordable alternative to the older, cheaper Viagra, but sales have been sluggish and the drug's patent has expired.
